It was 1848 when the Swiss Muggia family, in search of a safe place far from the uprisings taking place at the time, arrived in Sassuolo. Here they decided to start the business of selling spices and drugs as well as their infusion to make medical elixirs. Over the years Drogheria and Distilleria will be managed by entrepreneurs from Sassuolo, until 1927 when the business was bought for a thousand liras by Emilio Roteglia. Thus began the history of the family Roteglia, a story where family traditions and local traditions are family traditions and local traditions, until they created a famous brand for the production and commercialization of local liqueurs, such as Sassolino and Nocino, as well as other alcoholic infusions and bagne for sweets. From Emilio to Gilberto, from Gilberto to Lorenzo, distillery and grocery will pass from father to son for three generations in Roteglia.

The biggest hurdle comes when Lorenzo wonders who to leave the legacy of Roteglia 1848 to. Fearing that the proposals would only be made because of the attractiveness of the company’s name, he is always very careful to sift through them. The light came when he met a group of young people from Sassuolo who wanted to keep local traditions alive while respecting craftsmanship. By creating a bond of trust, Roberto became their mentor and shared his historical recipes and all his tricks of the trade.
Today Roteglia 1848 is a company with a young and enterprising spirit, but which has not abandoned the elements that made it great at its origins. The interiors of the factory have remained intact, like going back to 1848. Nor has the goodness of the traditional products, such as the historic Nocino and Sassolino, changed. Enterprising young people who range across the board in this world, creating combinations that are risky at first glance, such as combining liqueurs with unusual cheeses or sophisticated chocolates. Without ever forgetting to be artisans of the Sassuolo tradition.
