Tenuta Diavoletto

Tenuta Diavoletto. One of the most interesting young Italian wineries

Maniacal care of the vineyard, respect for the environment and minimal processing in the cellar are the rules of Tenuta Diavoletto, a young winery founded in 2012 in Bertinoro on the lush hills of Romagna but with a Nordic soul. Maximilian Girardi and his father Gerhard are in fact from South Tyrol, but found the ideal place to realize their dream in the most suggestive hills of Romagna. Albana, Trebbiano, Chardonnay and, above all, Sangiovese are the grapes from which the company wines are born, characterized by clear and lively aromas, freshness, minerality and an elegant profile. The merit is of a unique territory, kissed by the breeze of the Adriatic sea, and of the will of the vigneron to focus on quality rather than quantity through a rigorous selection of the best grapes.

“The company has a young approach, managed by young people, with a look at the wine of the future, a good wine, elegant that reflects the territory and gives emotions. We give a lot of importance to the environment, we do not use weeding we apply the integrated struggle, we have a very low environmental impact and we are doing studies on the ground for biological and biodynamic with the University of Bolzano, we try to minimize treatments in the vineyard , we are already using a very low amount of bisulfites almost at the limits set for natural wines. One year at the Merano Wine Festival they selected wines as natural even though we didn’t have the certification, but the values โ€‹โ€‹were right. We collaborate with Simonit & Sirch a Friulian pruning school, which is based on four simple rules that can be adapted to all forms of vine cultivation. Following and following, through pruning, the natural development of the branching of the vine ensures a healthy and long life to the vine “.

Words and thought of Maximilian Girardi, the owner of the winery: a grandfather from Romagna, a grandmother from Veneto and two Austrian grandparents, born in South Tyrol 30 years ago, in 2011 as by destiny the Girardi family finds Tenuta Diavoletto on its way, they immediately fell in love with the place, it was an opportunity for Maximilian to resume the work of the great-great-grandfather in Romagna, a winemaker from Caldaro in South Tyrol.

โ€œThe estate had been at a standstill for three years when we started to take care of it – continues Max – the vineyards submerged by the vegetation, the house completely to be redone, an important recovery job especially in the vineyard, the first pruning after years of freedom was crucial to give life back to the old vines so as to keep the hints of this soil in the wines. With the help of oenologist Giovanni Brighi, with us from the beginning, in 2013 the “Guide to Espresso” recognizes our Albana as the best white wine of Romagna, the following year at the Merano Wine Festival the “MWF Award “a” Primi Passi “, our Sangiovese in purity IGP, here me and my father, who helps and supports me, we said to ourselves “is the right way, let’s go aheadโ€ “.

From that moment on it has been a continuous growth in success and awards for such a young winery.

“We were taken by surprise, we did not expect all these awards and public growth. It gives us great pleasure and gives us energy every day to improve our work”.

Tenuta Diavoletto has seven hectares of vines, mainly Sangiovese and Albana, plus another hectare and a half freshly replanted in Albana, producing 20,000 bottles a year with the aim of being able to double the quantities.

The winery is set in one of the most beautiful hills of Italy, Bertinoro, a highly suited area for quality viticulture since Roman times, so much history has not stopped the Girardi family from the desire to produce more innovative wines, however marked by the territoriality, but mineral wines, subtle, endowed with elegance and depth, with clear aromas that fascinate for their liveliness.

This young and dynamic company, nationally awarded, is one of those wineries of which Romagna can be proud: a small artisan reality where the main ingredients are tradition and passion. Each bottle is considered sacred, has its own story to tell, and is personally taken care of by the wise hands of the Girardi family.
