There’re many good reasons to start assuming more turmeric in your diet!
Letโs begin by talking about the golden spice turmeric. Bright yellow in colour, it is obtained by grinding the stem of a tropical plant called Curcuma longa.
The spice is found mainly in India and Indonesia. In these countries, and in particular India, it is a sacred spice and has played an important part in their social, culinary and medicinal traditions. Indians consume on average 1.5-2g per day! It is widely used in Ayurveda, or traditional Indian medicine. In Ayurveda medicine, turmeric is a food with purifying therapeutic properties for the body and is used to treat a wide variety of physical ailments such as digestive disorders, fever, infections, arthritis, dysentery, jaundice and liver problems.
The term turmeric comes from the Indian word “Kour Koum” which means saffron. Curcuminoids are the main molecules present in turmeric (contributing to about 5% of the weight of the dry root) and are responsible not only for its yellow colouring, but also for the beneficial effects associated with its consumption. Curcumin has several pharmacological, antifungal, cholesterol lowering, antioxidant and anticancer properties.
To benefit from its properties, 1 to 2 teaspoons a day are recommended. It can be used with high-protein foods such as meat, fish and eggs as well as on soups and minestrone. Try it and you will discover all of its benefits.ย
Good health to you all!ย
