Flavors and scents of Calabria meet the story of three American sailors. A unique distillery in the world!
“My grandfather left Calabria to start a new life in U.S.A and he never got back”. This is the beginning of the history of “Vecchio Magazzino Doganale”, a company who produces high quality liquors, gin and bitters in the south Italy region called Calabria. The owner of this company, Ivano, infact retracing the history of his grandfather encountered the history of three american sailors. They shipwrecked in the calabrian coast and tried to save themself asking some helps in a old customs warehouse where Ivano’s grandfather worked. The american sailors began to work as delivery men and handymen but…they knew how to drink liqueurs and bitters!
From this legacy Ivano founded “Vecchio Magazzino Doganale”. In this place he tried his best to bring in the bottle the flavours and the raw materials of his beloved Calabria. Bergamot, orange, lemon, licorice, juniper, pine resin and other botanical treasure you can find them all in the Ivano’s products.
There are some curious and original bottles of this company. First of all I’d like to talk about “Gil”. These years will be remembered for a new attention for the gin and a rediscovery of this alcoholic drink: well, Ivano carefully traveled a lot around Calabria looking for some inspirations. He found it in a particular plant of juniper who grow up just beside the sea. Furthermore he added a spark of typical italian geniality adding the rediscovery of the peat: here you are “Gil” a calabrian peated gin, an original and mediterranean item in the world of gins.
If you want to go into the Vecchio Magazzino Doganale world you cannot miss Abracadabra. This is a symbol and an instrument, not only an alcoholic drink. Yes because Ivano, through Abracadabra, wants to let the world knows about the amazing and wonderful calabrian licorice: Abracadabra is a way for Ivano to spread all over the world how much is important in Calabria this black and tasty root.
The target of Ivano’s company are enthusiast, expert, connoisseur and premium customers but also bartender and mixologists from all over the world. We hope U.S.A customers will have the chance to taste the Ivano’s creations: they will be grateful of the history of their sailors!!
