Third Stop: Villa Picta Winery

The RoadTrip#1 of Andrea Zigrossi and Gilbert Bages to discover the new Italian winemaking realities continues at full speed.

Villa Picta is their third stop, it is in Lombardy, in the village of Villimpenta, in the agricultural plain on the border between the provinces of Mantua and Verona.

The winery is one of the best examples of the new winemakers’ way of thinking and abilities: from 2014 Paolo and Laura manage this young winery directly and they do it with a revolutionary attitude: “They are two crazy, in the best sense of the term– he tells us an ecstatic Andrea -they work on a fine line between tradition and innovation, trying to revolutionize the way wine is made in their area, still tied to classic methods”

Paolo and Laura’s winery is quite small, just over two hectares of vineyards for a maximum production of a few thousand bottles, but their passion is limitless: they grow Lambrusco, Garganega, Merlot and Marzemino grapes, cared for with untiring passion, banned the use of systemic pesticides and herbicides. Pruning is done with the Simonit & Sirch guyot system, low yields per hectare, selection of the best bunches and the harvest takes place exclusively by hand in crates in September and October.

Their production philosophy enhances the method of fermentation in the bottle, both for the types of sparkling and spumante wine. The prolonged aging on the lees allows to offer a wine with a true character. At the moment they produce four wines: a Lambrusco di Sorbara, an EXTRA BRUT red wine, a rosé BRUT and a white BRUT Nature “Lambrusco has a unique freshness with aromas of violets and berry fruits, the Bacio – Lambrusco di Sorbara classic method – represents love between Laura and Paolo,It has an excellent structure and leaves aromas of pomegranate”

“The only sin? – concludes Andrea joking – they produce too few bottles!”
